Welcome to the very first module of Advanced Media Research. This module is
designed to introduce you to the basic ideas and foundations of media research.
Research is one of the core activities of the academic and professional world, and in
media studies it has a particularly significant role. From understanding audience
behaviour to evaluating the influence of media on culture and politics, research equips
us with tools to study communication systematically.
Over the next two sessions, we will take a journey through the meaning, scope, and
importance of media research. We will see how media research is both an academic
field and an applied practice that informs industries, governments, and societies. By the
end of this module, you will have not only a working definition of media research but
also a clear idea of its applications, its types, and the reasons why it has become
indispensable in today’s communication environment. Think of this as setting the
foundation on which all the other modules on research design, sampling, content
analysis, ethnography, and so on will be built.
